AMBIC

CZECH republic's eyes in space

  • Earth Observation Mission
  • Up to 400 high-resolution photos per day
  • For Czech State Users
  • VZLU AEROSPACE leads the project
  • AMBIC mission is a part of Czech Ambitious Missions project.

MISSION

The AMBIC (Ambitious Czech Satellite) mission is designed to deliver valuable space data to the Czech state users. This satellite will capture both black-and-white and color images with a ground sample distance (GSD) of 1.2 meters, meaning each image pixel represents an area of 1.2 x 1.2 m. It will be able to transmit up to 400 photos per day. The mission consists not only of the satellite itself but also of a comprehensive ground segment. This includes a ground station serving as a “communication bridge” between Earth and the satellite, a “control center” to manage satellite operations, and a dedicated facility for processing and transforming the raw satellite data into final, user-ready outputs.

The project is led by VZLU AEROSPACE, which is responsible for development, integration and operation of the satellite. Collaborating on the project are OHB Czechspace, ESC Aerospace and World from Space as main subcontractors, and many other providers from the Czech Republic. AMBIC mission as the Czech Ambitious Missions project was funded by the Czech Republic through its Ministry of Transport so far (as of 1 March, Ministry of Industry and Trade took over the responsibility for space activities in the Czech Republic). The mission is carried out under an ESA contract.

WHAT WILL THE DATA BE USED FOR?

AMBIC could, among other things, enable monitoring of situations for crisis management or provide information for an integrated rescue system. It could help collect data, for example, during fires, floods, or tornadoes, or when monitoring highway conditions.

Expected application of the data from the AMBIC satellite:

  • Emergencies, monitoring, and providing data for the integrated rescue system
  • Waste management, landfill monitoring
  • Monitoring the situations in protected natural areas
  • Monitoring and assessment of urban light pollution
  • Monitoring sites designated for the development of new infrastructure
  • Monitoring corridors designated for future highway construction
  • Monitoring the railway corridor, its condition, and the assessment of potential risks
